The Amazing Spider-Man wasn't a movie I was overly keen to see. Not the best way to begin my first review, perhaps, but I'm not about to lie. The only reason I went to see it, was because my brother wanted to go. If it were up to me, I would have chosen Ted, but I'm glad I did. Though Spiderman is perhaps my least favorite of all superheros, the film was quite enjoyable. Andrew Garfield, played a very convincing and rather charming lead.
What I liked about this Spider-Man installment, was that there was an emotional aspect to it. During Spider-Man 2 and 3, I felt rather disconnected from the characters, as if the entire plot lied on the shoulders of the fight scenes, which were in themselves, predictable and mildly uninteresting from this critic's point of view. The Amazing Spider-Man delivered a more character-driven story line, while still enticing the audience with those oh-so intense fight scenes.
Favorite Scene: The best scene, in this writer's opinion, is a scene where Peter Parker/Spider-Man is rescuing a boy from a car that is literally hanging by a thread from a bridge. It comes to a point where Peter is holding the car up after the line breaks. He tells the boy, "Jack you have to climb to me." When the boy responds with, "I can't," Spider-Man tells him, "Put on my mask, it will make you strong- trust me." The boy puts on the mask and climbed to the back of the car to be saved.
Appropriate for Your Family?: It can be very difficult to decide what movies are appropriate for children, especially the young ones, to see these days. The Amazing Spider-Man is rated PG-13 in the United States, containing some potentially scary images of the villainous lizard-man, and fight scenes. There is occasional light swearing, the 'D' and 'A' word popping up now and again in passing.
